Petition: Manhattan Declaration
A little more than a year ago, Charles Colson, Robert George, and Timothy George spearheaded an effort to pen a document that outlined several key issues of concern for Christians engaged in culture. Their efforts, entitled the Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience, articulate three points on which Christians should be actively involved: life, marriage, and religous liberty. Considering the background of its chief architects, it is not surprising that these three areas are all issues that primarily motivate conservatives, however, the list of signers is not just the usual right wingers, but also includes notable leaders like Ron Sider, David Neff, Tim Keller, Leith Anderson, and David Platt. Additionally, it is admirable that it is not only Evangelicals that put together the document, but also members of the Roman Catholic Church, as well as the Orthodox Church. This demonstrates a great deal of unity across traditional denominational lines, and is certainly to be commended.
Finally, we should note, as the document itself does, that it does not say that these three issues are the only ones that Christians should be concerned about, but rather, that these are three major areas of concern. While the Manhattan Declaration doesn’t cover a compltely holistic agenda, it does point the right direction, and for that reason we strongly urge you to add your name to the list of signers.
